With all the crazy weather the last couple days, this week’s local history lesson from the Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area focuses on a truly historic storm. Check them out for more information or to learn how you can join.
Hurricane Agnes dumped 19 inches of rain from June 19-24, 1972 causing some of the most severe flooding this area has ever seen, especially in Phoenixville. This photo at the intersection of Bridge and Church Streets (the building in the background is now Sips Bistro & Bar) shows how deep it got in certain areas in town, deep enough for this person to row a boat down the street! Better known as The Flood of 72, this storm caused 50 deaths In Pennsylvania alone.
